how rich are they? A few mill is pocket change.
Really? I remember reading some Anet interview where they said the vast majority of players have less than 10k gold in storage.

Ah, found it:

At ArenaNet we play the game just like you do, so we know that for most of you, gold is a precious commodity that you work hard to attain. In fact, our statistics show that 50% of all active accounts have fewer than 10 platinum pieces, and 75% of all active accounts have fewer than 20 platinum pieces. So when we make small tweaks here and there to keep the economy under control, please understand that we???re not trying to make the game harder for the average player.
Now, this IS old, however, the gold gain abilities have gone down, not up (loot scaling), so my best guess would be it still applies.

Other than that, just farm to bring money into the economy, and power trade to boost your personal cash.
No, it was the one time A-net actually turned back GW time. All people got the inventory they had an hour earlier before the bug was introduced hence no one was able to cash in.

The type that got rich over night? pfft

The true rich people have been playing since the start, the people that pop out the woodwork with stacks of ecto/braces...well we know wwhere they got those don't we.

Power trading is virtually dead now. It can be near impossible to sell perfectly good req9 items at times. Anyone who has cash, has what they want already.
Prices will continue to drop so the mid to poor people can afford the l33t stuff too.

If you don't have xx millions already, good chance is you never will. Welcome to the game for scrubs, and lazy people.

There is a few exceptions to the above (see Witchblade with the mini-polar bear), but for many they'll never have much money.

This isn't to say money can't be made. With effort/time you can pocket a few mill, but be under no illusions of easy money.

You can pocket up to 5k (not including drops) by vanquishing. Pick up ALL your drops, salvage what you might need for further armours, then ID (important, as IDing adds value), then sell to merchant.

Don't waste money (see mini pets, people with multiple armor sets etc). Don't buy keys or lockpicks. These are money sinks. If you want something, it generally works out cheaper to just go buy it.

Sorry mate but seems you missed the first one that a.net never rolled back!

So if you where online the first time you could buy ecto's for a few hundred g's. To bad I was just starting out then and didn't have more money to spend. So I only was able to profit a very tiny bit from it. But no roll back happened for this first screw up.

Second time, way later in gw history, it happened they did a rollback.

Again was there but now with lots more money to spend but now the rollback hit, for best actually! The damage could have easily destroyed gw.

Me too. Just playing the game and selling the good stuff on guru or in-game can make you a lot of gold. But, it depends somewhat upon how much time you have to play. If you only have a few hours a week to play the game, you're not going to accumulate huge amounts of gold unless you spend your time purposely farming, trading, etc. - but where's the fun in that.

1. If you're not going to spend your money on mini-pets, multiple armor sets, etc., - what are you going to spend it on? You really can't "take it with you" and it's only "play money" - what would you save it for?

2. A lot of people open a few chests and get a bunch of crap stuff and think lockpicks/keys are a waste of money. Yes, you get a lot of crap, but in the long run you can make a lot of gold. But, then again, the fewer people who use lockpicks, the fewer good items there are available, and the more they're worth. (Edit - once you get far enough into the game, it's more profitable to only use lockpicks in Hard Mode, dungeons, or other elite areas. Admittedly, the ratio of crap to good is a bit high in the earlier areas.)

3. If you want something, it's generally more enjoyable to play the game, make money, and buy it, rather than farm for it.

In the end, every piece of gold is introduced in the game by drops.
So it's the result of poor helpless creatures killed over and over again by greedy players. Or creatures that were just foolish enough to attack the ones that would not have killed them if those creatures were not hostile to them.

Now how did that gold end up with the true rich players?
1. I have done what you have not (farmed for ages, been somewhere at the right moment, played xxxx hours)
2. I can do what you can't (running, farming, other services)
3. I have what you don't have.

In the end, Nr 3 is the most profitable.
The reason is simple. Nr 1 is either reproducable for all (given time) or in the event of a 'bug' never reproducable.
Nr 2 offers more gain but is less stable (Droks runners replaced by Dervish and also lower prices, carto services replaced by Texmod).
The only problem with Nr 3 is that there is not much stuff left that is really rare. The true rare items don't drop anymore or too infrequent to base a business on. The rest is still valuable but nowhere near the 'old' prices.

If you want to be in the top 100 of rich people, pray for a very lucky drop.
If you want to make better money than most other players, find a need for a unique/very difficult service in the game and do that. If not, just have fun and play for hours making some gold (and not spending) knowing you will never be the ulitmate rich person unless very lucky.

My post in reference to making money. You make money by not spending it on frivolous things. Once the OP is satisfied with the cash they made, then they can spend it on what they want.
